If your guitar strings have gone rusty then it sounds that they need changing. You can buy them in pack of six, you'll need to know what gauge 1st. 9 or 10 is best for electric, 11 or 12 for acoustic. Hope this has been some help.

String Cleaner is the best, but also after you've played, wipe the strings each time with a soft cloth as this will remove any grease/oil from your fingers that are on the strings.

Wipe them down after every use with a clean cloth.
Some people I've heard wipe them down with a little vinegar or window cleaner, never tried it myself.
