first of all, i would like to apologize on behalf of the people of this country for the ridiculously ignorant comments they have left in an answer to your question.
the reason it took so long to help and they still aren't helping is because our current administration only acts upon that they can benefit from. if it doesn't involve making them richer or more powerful, they don't care. it is just as simple as that.
i am so sorry for what happened to you and i hope you and your family can get through this.

Spike Lee had a documentary on New Orleans & the slow Katrina response. Everyone was upset about the truth that came out. If u get a chance, ask someone about the documentary. I'm also from New Orleans, & I just moved to New York last week. I'm scared about a future hurricane. FEMA didn't help us innocent people properly. I don't see why the fraudulent people got $10,000 for their contents for their home, & I only got $785. It's just so upsetting!

I foresaw what would happen in New Orleans when a big storm came. People with a way to leave would run off and leave the poorer people to fend for themselves. The Super-dome shelter was a make-do solution and was doomed to be a disaster. This was something that was going to happen. Then there was chaos all along the board with the rescue groups. They weren't communicating with one another and the scope of the disaster was huge. I think it was inevitable that this would be a chaotic and imperfect rescue operation BUT what rankles me is the seeming indifference, even to this day, of the national leaders.
I expect people to be human and make mistakes but to be callous and uncaring while they do this is unforgivable.

First of all, the local and state governement let you down. They had no plan and didn't get people out of the city. They've waisted your tax dollars and now they are wasting everyone elses. Second, the State of Lousisianna has a national guard and they should have been deployed immediately as well as having supplies ready. Everyone in the country saw the storm coming, the states should have been getting ready for it. The Federal government should have then stepped after the locals did their job, which they didn't do.

Your stupid major was a big turn off to the masses.
Your population is mostly lazy, "I want you to fix my problems".
The rest of the country has spent enough on you. Get off your *** and clean it up.
When my home was flooded, water up to the light switch, me and my family cleaned up everything, no state help, no fed help, only the locals would go around and help each other.
Get to work.

I responded to your earlier question...read it. And for another thing, since when aren't individual people responsible for their own well-being? Did you know a monstrous CAT 5 hurricane was coming? Did you know that N.O. sits in a bowl surrounded by water? Did you think to evacuate? I don't mean to be harsh, but the Feds did their job. The failure was at the state and local level.

Who's he? Nagin?
It's a state and local issue at the onset...so which state or local politician are you talking about?
I fear you're buying into the crazy talk. Natural disasters are A) natural and B) disasters. Don't expect the government to be able to fix either of those. Protect yourself and your family and stop pointing fingers. Personal responsibility is the key.

Oh p-l-e-a-s-e... a better question would be:
Why didn't the people of New Orleans try to help themselves? And better yet... why are they still not attempting to help themselves, but rather expecting the rest of the country to take care of them for life???
We all have problems, but work thru them and move on!

Cause in the "New America" we are on our own. Social security is now a 20 guage shotgun and Kevlar body armor. Thanks to the neo-Con economic policy makers who call this the "Ownership society".
