Hunting with ferrets to catch vermin and catch some food to feed them with (and yourself if you like rabbit), is it fair, as long as the quarry is dispatched quickly and humanely? On one hand is it more humane and 'closer to nature' than gassing, shooting etc. ?On the other hand you might have to dig your ferret out!

I say it's a damn good idea. Why not. Rabbits are the natural prey of ferrets and they should be allowed the thrill of the hunt. Rabbits are a prey animal. They are food for predators, uch as ferrets and humans. We have the opposable thimbs so there fore we decide what we want to hunt. As far as humane killing... if you are drawing and quartering a rabbit while alive that's not human it's actually pretty sick but letting a fereret hunt and kill a rabbit... that's natural selection. As for Rats, they are disease carrying vectors that should be eliminated in any fashion.

Hunting with Ferrets is an age old way of catching vermin. There
is no reason that the Quarry is not despatched instantly, as the
ferret is doing what comes naturally and not into confrontation (anyone seen a ferret in action will agree !!) Gassing has a knock on effect to other animals and plants, shooting,,,well
I would rather trust a ferret to get it right first time !!

i know they still use ferrets for hunting i believe it is in england and another country i can not remember but they need to be trained and started at a young age and it is best to feed ferrets raw meats as they are obligated carnavores but not many ferrets have been trained to hunt i would love to use mine for hunting but 5 out of 6 of them are over a year old and well dont listen to commands and my other i might be able to train as he is only 15 weeks but as it is i will just go to my friend who raises and butchers rabbits for the food and spoil my ferrets and it is NOT ILLEGAL to hunt with ferrets a great web site all about ferrets is www.everythingfert.proboards36.com

You cannot remove the fear of being on the wrong side of a hunt - I,m sure that death would not come that quickly. It may well be 'as nature intended' but this is not a valid argument. The law of the wild is red in tooth and claw, governed by fear, pain and gruesome demise. Lions can take a couple hours to finally kill a buffalo - it happens, OK - it would be cruel to copy it.

I think that it is unfair for sport and we should not get involved in watching animals suffer for our own entertainment.
On the other hand, to hunt rabbits with ferrets for food is Ok in my opinion, as long as the animal is killed quickly.
Hunting rats... who really cares about rats. I wouldn't want to see an animal suffer.

Hunting with ferrets is illegal in the US, but is still practiced in the UK (if that is where you are from?) While I don't agree with it at all for a few different reasons, it is common there and what people do with their ferrets over there is their business, sadly.

NOT. any form of hunting or killing of creatures is terrible. Whilst I know it HAS to be done to contain vermin and wild animals such as rabbits etc, there should be a total ban on any type of inhumane killing. Its about time the worlds governments got their fingers out of their arses and got motivated to do this. Also the use of another animal being trained to kill a fellow animal repulses me. i know its natural in the wild, but for a "sport" its sick

no i don' think it is good. You said "catch some food to feed them with" I know my ferrets would not eat them. They are not wild... My ferret has killed a mouse once, but it just killed it and dropped it! it didn't want to eat it. and your ferrett could easily get sick if it did want to eat it.
