This country has bent over backwards for these people. C'mon, a year is way too long. It's time they took responsibility for themselves, and stood on their own 2 feet!
I'm tired of supporting the lazy people who aren't willing to help themselves! We all have problems, but work thru them and move on!
And as far as returning... didn't they learn from their mistakes the first time??? They're foolish to build the city in the same spot and expect different results. Let them be totally on their own the next time around.

wow! you are hitting on such a huge issue. i think we all know that some of the people of New Orleans were not treated properly. the response time for help was extremely slow. the New Orleans experience showed us that even with all that training and study on how to prepare for a disaster, nothing truly prepares you for the real deal except experience. there are obviously two sides to the story. some people were helped well and some weren't. i think a lot of the television documentations on New Orleans are very bias and represent only the people who weren't helped which i personally feel is a small percentage. All our information about what happened in New Orleans is coming from the media unless you were actually there. get it? the media! the media is obviously going to show all the flaws in the response, even if there were little in comparison to the percentage of people who made it. sometimes when i watch these documents i can't believe how much some people are so dependent on the government. the people who are lazy were/are usually the ones who had problems. they don't want to let go of New Orleans. they should be glad they have the best gift of all, life. they could go out and create a better life for themselves. the whole issue is crazy. the best way to get these people off their feet right now would be to start rebuilding houses because a lot of complaints were from those fema trailers.

The federal government is sending a lot of money to the Gulf Coast and it is only right that they should do this. The scope of the problem is so huge it is going to take a long time to get things straightened out. They are working on the levees right now and that is the first thing to be considered. FEMA campers are where they are needed. That is important too.
New Orleans needs to be put right so that the people can THEN HELP THEMSELVES. And yes, a ticket home is needed too.

We've been supporting these people for a year. Most of them were on welfare before the storm. I think its time to cut them lose. They have job fairs that none of them show up to, even when transportation is provided. They are leaches on the system. Those that lost their homes will need to deal with the insurance agencies as we all do in this country during natural disasters. Just because they from from New Orleans, they are no more special than say the people in the NE who lost their homes to flooding, or the ones who have lost everything to a tornado, for a fire. The renters that were relocated are lucky, they don't have to deal with the property and the building. They will never be able to return to New Orleans unless they have good jobs and can afford the new housing. It will be very expensive as all new constructions costs are.

The government has allocated 100+ Billion dollars. What more can they do? People expect the government to take care of them from cradle to grave, it's no wonder the first thing the hurricane victims cried out for was government help. I wonder how many billions of dollars the government has given New Orleans over the past 50 years for the purposes of strengthening the levees. Instead of throwing corrupt public officials out of office, what does New Orleans do... re-elect Nagin. What a joke. I feel terrible for the people, but at some point it's time to grow a brain.

The correct version would be; "Do you think the people of New Orleans were treated fairly". Yes, I do. They had the warning to get out, and they didn't. Nagin could have called all of those school buses into service to get them out and he didn't. If the newspeople and camera crews could get to the dome within hours of the hurricane, the people could have walked the 3 miles north to get out of the problem areas. Instead, they CHOSE to sit there and wait on the government to fix everything. I had a white friend in New Orleans at the time. He walked out.

One's opinion on this will depend on whether one beleives it is the government's job to take care of people, or whether people are supposed to take care of themselves.
With all the construction in NO now, anyone who doesn't have a job is either totally disabled or lazy. it was on the radio that they are seeking construction workers up to $20/hr and maybe one person will show up to seek work.
I drive from Southern Texas to Virginia several times a year, and we have to plan so we don't need to stop at a motel anywhere within 100 miles of NO, because there is so much construction that the workers have to drive way out in the country.
They simply can't obtain any more workers. We stayed at a motel in Dusan last winter, and the place was barely livable. The motel owners simply couldn't get anyone to fix it, nor to get parts or materials.
So, you who whine about the government or anyone else not helping the residents of NO get on their feet are simply unaware of how much work is being done there.
What you had was a city with maybe 30% of all its inhabitants were too lazy to work, sitting around expecting the government to feed them. Well, nothing has changed. They are still sitting around expecting someone else to take care of them, won't even accept paid jobs to fix the city.
I believe NO would be better off if the other half of its residents never came home. Evidence shows that many who have moved to other locations are finding work and have no intention of going back to a worthless city that is below sea level.

it was stupid they made that place. Its like putting a bowl in water and hoping it wont get wet. IT was just unlucky it was a pretty bad strom. Now the New orleans ppl are going back there,(some) because they said, " New Orleans is my only home." Well I heard on the News an other strom is coming!! So their bowl is just going to flood again. America just wasted billions a dollars.

IMO, some were treated fairly and some were treated badly. Just as happens after any natural disaster.
Why should they go back to New Orleans? It's just going to happen again and they're still under sea level. If they want to go back it should be on their own heads for any other disaster that comes along and creates havok down there and the rest of us shouldn't have to pay and pay and pay and pay to keep rebuilding. Just as it should be for any other hurricane/flood/fire prone area.

Everyone knows that the government screws up everything they touch. I don't think they were treated well, but I don't think it was intentional. BUT, what about how they're treating the government. They're literally stealing billions of dollars from all of us. You can't blame everyone, but I think it showcases what they are all about.
