I had so much spam that they actually shut down my modem. I didn't have internet for like a week. How can I prevent this from happening again?

The BEST way to avoid spam is to be very carefull how many forms you put your email address into on the internet. This is where marketers are getting your address. YOU are giving it to them in most cases. READ the privacy policies of these websites before you fill in the forms. Do you download "free" stuff? If you do I guarantee you WILL get "spam" except it isn't spam if they told you they would be contacting you in their privacy policy. Didn't read the policy or see it? Too bad! On any form you fill out on the web it usually says right next to the "submit" button that by clicking submit you are agreeing that you have read and agree with the policy. If you click this without reading the policy, you are sooner or later going to be spammed. Except it ISN'T spam if their policy clearly states that they will contact you or share/sell your information to other companies. If their privacy policy said anywhere in it that they would do these things, and you click submit, you gave them permission to send this stuff to you at that makes it not spam.

There are some exceptions to this rule, but in general MOST "spam" is inadvertantly brought onto you by you. Yes, there are filters and softwares, and guess what? With very few exceptions the companies that give these away and or sell them are themselves hooked up with other companies that will send you even more mail you don't want. I use four free protection softwares on my computer, none of which prevent spamming. I have had about twenty different email addresses over the years and the ONLY ones that got spammed were the one's entered into webforms with loose privacy policies.

I use free Yahoo or Hotmail accounts to enter into questionable sites. Do not use your primary address for these sites. If any spam problems get out of hand, I simply delete the account. Simple. READ THOSE PRIVACY POLICIES. They may seem long but with a little practice you will learn what to look for and will be able to find the important info quickly.

There are spam filters on most operating systems so check the settings on yours and reset to a higher level. Also do a Google search for others that you can install.
