You want a neutral pH as a reference point. If you use a base or acid, its pH may have been altered by aging, by condensation, by dilution, or by some other change.By using a neutral buffer, which resists pH changes, your calibration is more likely to be accurate.

fisher sells them in 4.0, 7.0 and 10.0 pH. go with those and it will work well.
