Not sure where you are in Illinois, but one of my favorite weekend getaways was always Warren Dunes beach in Michigan.

There are tons of vacations spots close to Illinois. The Dells are the best. If you want to do in Illinois you should go to Gurnee, to go to Six Flags. Ohio is cool because of Cedar Point. (Ohio is 5 hours away from Illinois and The Dells are 4. To get to Siz Flags from downtown Chicago would be about 45minutes-1hour). Chicago's cool because there's so many things to do and you'll never get bored if you like museums, shopping, beaches, and looking at nice buildings.

When I lived in Illinois, my favorite place to go was Indiana Beach in Monticello, IN. It's about an hour and a half away from Chicago and has two parks in one; a water park and an old time amusement park. The entire park is located on Lake Shafer. The water park has a ton of slides and a lazy river. The amusement park makes you feel like you're traveling back in time to the old Coney Island. It's a wonderful place to go and the rents are pretty cheap there.

My fave is Door County, WI---if you are located in Chicago it's about a 4 hour drive. It's a peninsula with Green Bay on one side and Lake Michigan on the other---you can go there year round but the best times are summer and fall when the leaves are changing (usually first 2 weeks in October)
Check out www.doorcountyvacations.com for lots of info on accommodations, restaurants and activites.

Personally, my wife and I were making road trips to the Nashville area.
We'd Priceline a hotel in Brentwood, TN for about $36 a night (Hilton Suites). We'd go toward the end of October for the Jack Daniels BBQ Cookoff in Lynchburg, TN. We'd then try to catch a show at the Opry during the evening. Then we'd try to make it to something else, depending on what we were in the mood for. Once year we drove out to Memphis to see Graceland. Another year, we spent the day at the Country Music Hall of Fame.
