give speeches infront of the class or other groups. depending upon the class, they may also require a taped presentation and also a structured outline, complete with footnotes for each speech/presentation.

In a public speaking class, you are generally given a subject to talk about. After that, you form your speech or presentation, get approval, rewrite it to improve it, and then give the speech or presentation.

This allows you to learn certain writing skills. It also teaches you things like stance, voice inflection, posture...the idea is to not only make you more comfortable being in the public eye but to teach you to at least SEEM more comfortable. Once you overcome the fear of public speaking, and learn to how to say what you want to say, things become quite a bit easier in life.

While some people think this is only good for those that have to deal with speeches and presentations, it is an incredibly useful skill no matter what. Police can use it when working with the public, doctors when getting history, and even a pharmacist when talking with a customer.

I think it is an awesome class. Though my professor was really strict, I learned a lot. What you do is just give different types of speeches to your classmates. You usually get to pick the topic, and then you write your speech and present it to your class. You get graded on preparation, and presentation. I think the hardest thing about it is making your speech last long enough. You are given time maximums and minimums for how long your speech has to be. I would write this long speech and then practice giving it, and it would only be like 2 min. long. You have to work at it! I think you will love this class because it opens you up and also you learn a lot from everybodies speech. So I hope you have fun. Good luck Gorgeous!!

You research a topic, compose a speech and give a verbal presentation to the class.

Many people fear public speaking more than they fear death. Good luck

OK, what you do is put together different speeches with different themes, and you give them in front of the class. The teacher will rate you, and so will the students. In some speeches you'll try to sell something, in others you will educate the class, etc. It's fun!

Get up in front of your class and give speeches, then watch yourself on tape and critique your own speech. It will probably be the single most useful class you take in your entire life.

You learn how to prepare an interesting speech. You also how to prevent yourself so that you will not make a fool of yourself.
