My new HP laptop comes with NO CD's at all. The "Recovery Disk" is a partition of the hard drive. I would like to have an actual copy of the XP Home CD as well as drivers for the HP laptop. How can I get it? Also, how could I possibly rebuild my system if the entire hard drive crashed including the partition with the "Recovery" info?

hp calls it a recovery kit
> this includes your operating system, win xp-home
+ all necessary drivers & tools

normally ships in form of dvd media, unless u'r notebook does not support dvd's

pretty steeply priced at about $ 50 - $ 75

which would've cost u an extra $ 20 at time of purchase
> lesson 4 next time

this recovery kit contains entire os & u can also do a fresh install after format or partition too

When I bought my HP laptop, the store gave me all the original CD but I had to pay something extra. You can also make an exact copy (a backup) of your HD using a second HD. This must be done by an expert because they have the required programs. Copying all the HD including partitions etc and not just the files requires special programs which every PC or laptops do not have. The HD is not copied by pressing Control+C. I have made copies of the HD from all my computers at home and at work therefore last time my work computer crashed due to a sudden power failure, I was able to reprogram all the HD in just 10 minutes using the backup.

The Windows you have installed on that laptop has proprietary things, so if you were to just install a regular Windows XP, it probably would not work properly. If you do lose your recovery partition, you can order CDs off of HP that will do the same thing as the recovery partition.

OEM is cheaper than retail just without the box but i think it has the manual and findingj the drivers are on the hp site.

You'll have to order it through HP. Most laptop manufacturer are doing it this way nowadays. On the Sony I had to make recovery discs using the dvd burner which is just re-imaging the hard drive in case it failed.
