Gastro means stomach, entero is intestines. They specialize in the study of the digestive system from top to bottom. There are many tests that can be performed. for the top half of the system, they have you swallow a contrast medium so they can view it as it goes to the stomach and small intestine by way of an x-ray called fluoroscope, like a moving picture in real time. If they are going from the "bottom" end up, they use a small scop to enter the anus and view the large intestine. They will put you to sleep so as not to feel any discomfort and when the procedure is over you will not have any after-pain.
