One way to repel flies is to put some water in a clear zip lock baggie and hang up it at your door. I read this and do it for my home and it really works good!
Don't know why it works unless it has something to do with their reflection.
I fill the baggie about 1/2 to 3/4 full of water-and use a small nail to hang it up on my door.

Fruit flys can be difficult in the south. One interesting thing is that they can live in the sink drain. Pouring boiling water in there can be the last cure if they have been around a while and other methodes do not give lasting results. Emptying trash often helps. Using old zip lock bags when disposing of stuff they like. Vinegar can be used to attract and trap them. I use a waste can that works like the old diaper pails with an air tight flip top lid Walmart had them last year. Some insecticides are what I would call natural and I spray my garbage container if I spot even one. Then there is the old indian trick, when the smell and flies get annoying move to a new location.
for house flys a swatter and keeping the door shut works for me. Finding what attracts them like cows, can help the diagnosis. Shooting the neighbors cattle gives rise to a worse problem so I do not advise that, unless you are really clever he he.

Fruit flies need to have their food source removed; usually overripe fruit.

House flies are more persistent. There are some fly traps out there that do a decent job without harming anything but the fly.

Make sure you get rid of all garbage that is around your cans, and keep a tight lid on the garbage cans. Remember, they breed in garbage and animal droppings, so keep all feces cleaned up in your yard, and ask your neighbors to keep thier lids on tight and thier yard cleaned up.

Flies, like people need three things to live, food, water and air.

Get a dehumidifier for the basement, so that the water is eliminated down there and they have nothing to "drink". Also, keep all standing water drained, as it can promote mosquitoes and west nile virus and other diseases.

Make sure your gutters are clean, so that water doesnt accumulate in there for the flies.
Change the bird bath daily, (if you keep it in there), so that mosquitoes dont breed...but remember, flies will drink there too :)

I wish you well..
