Studying English means studying reading, literature, composition and grammar. All of those are valuable subjects. Let's see why.

Reading - Reading is probably the most important skill a person can have. The better you read, the more you can learn. Without reading, you can't learn any other subject! You may disagree with what I just wrote, but you should thank an English teacher that you were able to read it.

Literature - In most "English" classes, students study literature. You learn the history of literature written in English, who the major authors were and what the important works are. More importantly, you learn how to understand and analyze literature. Why is this important? 1. Literature is fun. The better you are at understanding it, the more you will enjoy it. 2. Literature helps us understand the world. It gives us new perspectives, makes us think, and gives us a window into a different time or place. 3. By reading great authors, we can improve our own writing.

Composition - By "composition," I mean all forms of writing. Just like reading, writing is an essential skill. In every single profession, you must be able to write. The more clearly and appropriately you can write, the better off you'll be. In English class, you learn the all different forms of composition -- including narratives (stories), letters, essays, memoirs and more. A good English teacher will help you master all the different forms and recognize the differences among them. That way, whenever you need to write something in your life, you will have the skills to write it correctly and intelligently.

Grammar - In this category I'm also including spelling and punctuation -- all the "mechanics" of writing. The bottom line is that Standard American English has strict rules about spelling, punctuation and grammar. If you don't know the rules, you will appear uneducated. If you use the language in the standard way, you will appear intelligent. Also, whenever you write, no matter what you are writing, you want people to pay attention to what you have to say. When you use poor grammar, people pay more attention to your mistakes then to your content. Part of writing well is writing clearly and correctly.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

Because English is:

1. The language of Business.
2. The language of flying - All flights speak English.
3. English will expand your choices & options, period.

Besides the more languages u speak the better u will be.
And at least in USA, is also more relevant in that without English you will not get much help or success in life or will be pigeonholed to a small segment of it.

You need to study English so you will know how to write a paper in an educated manner. Even if you do not want to go to college, at some point you will most probably have to write something for a boss. You do not want to come off as uneducated.

People judge you by your use of grammar and your writing skills, especially if your chosen profession is medical, legal, management, or some other job that would be considered a "professional" position. If you don't speak and write well, you won't be nearly as effective in any job as someone who does speak and write well. Poor communication skills will keep you from getting or keeping those well-paying jobs we're all after.

Because most of your generation doesn't know their native language well enough to compose a coherent sentence. If you go to college, you have to know how to write coherently, for that you need a foundation in English Grammar and Composition.

Just because you speak a language doesn't mean you know everything about it.

the purpose of language is to communicate. since the advent of the civilization, the human being have developed many scripts and languages. that happened gradually. most of the languages are somewhat similar phonetically (barring the Cantonese). as the human race spread around the globe in quest of livelihood it required one language to communicate with each other and as the English speaking people traveled across the globe therefore they took with them their language also. it is easy phenomena. for the reason that the English speaking people have taken their language in every nook and corner therefore people across the world are connected with each other with this language.
another answer is that since the English speaking people have taken the world economy in their hands therefore you will have to speak their language to get/have anything.
