It's close to impossible to try to build a hoverboard without a 'path'. Seems to me that the idea behind that back to the future haverboard was magnetic--a hoverboard with fans will be kick up too much air and is more difficult to maneuver. And don't even get started on how hard it would be for it to be jet propelled.

The 'path' like those used in roller coasters and some highspeed or bullet trains will need to be vast and in a webdesign for you to be able to opt for different areas to go to.

the idea and application outweighs it's use and practicality.

Leave it to Marty to do the hovering--you're just gonna have to push off with your feet for a while longer.

i could properly ask myself the same question, too: even as is "Jaws XII" ever going to go back out? The hoverboards you're talking about received't hit the marketplace till 10 years or so.

it's annoying. you always think some techno type thing will be invented but it usually never is.

2015 is still another 9 years away. don't keep your hopes up, pal. if you invented something that would be way cool. but that ever happening is highly un-probable.

people don't really invent things anymore. well, that i noticed at least. sure, the military will probably come out with more high-tech gizzmos. but, do you really think they would lend them out to the public?

even if there were hoverboards... i don't think we would be able to buy them. they would be used by the CIA, FBI, Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guards, etc.

why would we get 1????!!!!

We have them, just on a lightly larger scale. The military built maglev sleds for moving cargo in1997 because they cereate less drag and disperse weight better than wheels or treads. When the technology to power them becomes more practical we'll probably see the technology in a lot more applications.
The only thing I could imagine that would stop us from making skateboards would be how increadibly dangerous it would be to have your center of gravity that high above a nearly frictionless surface.

It is a fantasy. Not going to happen in our life times.

There is no reason to think that it will be practical or even possible. And the expense of digging up everything and putting a metal repelling shield under the ground everywhere would be a tad high.

Plus it would kill all the flowers and trees.

Okay, They are late on delivering the hoverboards. But They were also late on delivering 1984, so it all kind of works out. Who are those They people, anyway???

I have heard that scientists are developing one right now, but all it can do is hover for a few seconds. Maybe it will be ready for 2015, maybe it won't. We'll have to wait and see.

I remember reading somewhere that they are trying to do it for 2015. They believe that it is possible, but only to lift yourself up, not to thrust you forward or do banked curves like in the movie.

I hope real close....But what I really hope I'm alive for is the Jetsons space car...You know the one that George Jetson uses and it turns into a briefcase...yeah that one.

Hoverboards are closer though, I'd ride one to work and avoid traffic.
