Okay, I know I can save pictures on a blank cd, but I have 6.4GB (a year and a halfs worth) which would be quite a few cds. (702MB each) I didn't know if there was something else I could get to save them on. There's no floppy drive. On the front of the tower it just says memory stick, smartmedia, compact flash/microdrive, SD/multimediacard. Is that only to put files ON the computer or can I buy a memory stick to save files OFF of the computer? I'm so lost lol. If nothing else I'll just copy everything to bunches of blank cds but I was hoping there was an alternative. Any suggestions?...other than not taking so many pictures.

Yes you can both save and copy to and from any one of those types of memory cards (Memory Stick, SmartMedia, CompactFlash, or SD/MMC). You can just drag and drop to it just like with a floppy drive.

Also, having a built-in card reader will really come in handy if you have a digital camera since they use a least one of those types of memory cards to store pictures on. For any pictures you take you can just take the card out of the camera when it's full and plug it into your computer to copy them over.

If you have 6.4 GB of pictures you just want to store and shelve somewhere, I would recommend getting a DVD burner if you don't already have one. You can purchase one these days for less than $40 (sometime less than $30) and it's worth the price since the discs themselves are very cheap nowadays and one disc can hold 4.7GB. All you will need is 2 discs and you're set. If you know how to burn pictures to a CD, then burning to DVD is pretty much the same. This is also far cheaper than getting an equivalent memory card... Any 4 GB flash card alone goes for well over $120 just for one.

A very easy form of storage is the USB Flash Memory Stick, also known as a Pen Drive. You just plug it into a USB connector on the front or back of your computer. It appears as another disk drive, so you can run Windows Explorer, find a bunch of files on your hard drive and just drag and drop them to the Memory Stick. You can see whats on the Memory Stick and double-click any file to view it.

This is a lot quicker and more convenient than burning CDs or DVDs.

They are available in various sizes at low prices. 1GB is £20/$35 or less. There are loads on eBay, but some of the offers look too good to be true, especially those delivered from hong kong, so watch out. See links for articles warning about fake, unreliable Memory Sticks on eBay. Check the seller's feedback is near 100% good or buy from another website. Test the drive as soon as you get it by filling it up with files and checking it stores the full capacity and the files aren't corrupted. Pay with Paypal, so you can always get a refund. If you do all this, you can still take advantage of some of the great bargains on eBay.

If you are willing to invest in a new drive you can try out those new blue ray disks by sony. which can hold data twice that size on a single disk. (you will save a lot on the long run) .

Compressing them is an another solution which will save some space to a certain extent.

You have answered your Q by wanting to buy a Memory stick and storing your pictures on it. Memory sticks or flashdrives or pen drives come with different memory capacities e.g 128 MB till 80 GB !! Just buy one which suits your needs.

Okay, Pics and music are the 2 things I know of that take alot of space on your hard drive. not sure what kind of computer have there, there are a few ways you can do this:

1. burn to CD or CD's if you have a CDR-RW
2. depending on what your ram is now (i.e. 32,64,128,256) you can buy ram sticks and install them or have them installed
3. zip them with a zip drive and compress them and leave on hard drive or save to CD.

If you are not sure what you are doing it is best to get professional help doing this.

As far as I am aware you can transfer to and from your SD memory card and PC without any problems.

The other alternative maybe an external drive, or a zip drive - which are high capacity disks for storage
