Because people are people and prejudice! Human nature controls people and people fear what is different and unknown.
It is also human to want to dominate and conquer and to want to force others to do as we do.
People kill others in the name of religion because they need and excuse to justify their deeds.
If everyone really followed their religion, we would all respect each other even if our beliefs are different, but then perhaps this would be heaven and not earth and we would be spirits and not humans!!!

Wars have been fought in the name of religion for centuries. Why would we expect it to change now? I find that the most ironic part of it is that practically all religions profess to believe some aspect of the Golden Rule.

People interpret teachings to fit their needs. So if their need is to prove to everyone else that their religion is the only one that's righteous, they fight to the death for that cause. That kind of extremism is what leads them to wage war against others who might not agree with their views. I personally think it's just an ego thing. "Look how great I am, I'm willing to kill myself for our religion. I am martyr for our religion. What have your done to prove your greatness?"

Most religions, at some time or another, will use their holy books to justify their points of view, including violence or war. It is a perversion of what those books teach. It's easy to twist words around, take them out of context, and make them fit what your motives are.

Beats me. Maybe because if you kill the other guy, you are more right? Like settling a debate with a fistfight - might equals right.
