Insecurity & fear of abandonment is what usually drives people to try to control others. Also, somtimes it is due to childhood abuse. The feeling of being controlled by another individual, causes the abusee to grow up trying to control everything around them, in an effort to NOT be controlled themselves.

Recognition of the problem and it's possible underlying causes is a step in the right direction.
Seeing a qualified therapist is another.

Many things can cause a person to be possessive. If its possessiveness over another person it can be attributed to jealousy, insecurity, their instabilities, etc.

If they are possessive over objects or materialistic things it can be caused by pride, envy etc. If you are the possessive one you can speak to a professional who may walk you through some mental tasks you can do in situations of possessiveness. If it is someone else do not bother trying to change them as it will never happen.

exactly what "azoasis" said, fear of losing someone, first off this is just my opinion, and i mean just that!!!
if you are doing all the things that you believe are right in the relationship then you have nothing too fear, you cant stop someone from leaving if that's what they want too do.
it's not your fault they want too leave, so you should let go of them and conquer your fear.
i am not saying don't try to talk to them or come too an understanding and maybe they might change their minds but being possessive or trying to keep them from going only makes it hard for the people involved.
( i want too add this does not include Minor's )

Insecurity & fear.

The best way to cure insecurity is to deal with unresolved core issues and identify the negative lies we believe about ourselves. Every person is incredibly valuable, and has a unique contribution to make. That truth doesn't really help us though until we believe it.

The best way to rid oneself of fear is whenever you have a thought that is based in fear, replace it with the appropriately related thought that is based on love. Love is the only thing that can conquer fear.

You cannot change someone else. You can change your own behavior though, you just have to really want to. A behavior like that is usually learned from your parents. To get it out of your system, counseling is probably the best way.
