The babies are in a seperate tank (all from one birth) and after a week the ones that are a bit larger appear to start eating the smaller ones. Anybody else seen or heard of this? Do you continue to seperate the babies as they continue to grow?

It seems that a couple of the frye outgrow the others and then the smaller ones start to disappear.

Platys as well as most live bearers are canabalistic. You can make a breeding tank with an open "v" set into the top portion of it and the water flow moving the babies to the bottom of the "v" and out a narrow space between the panes of glass making the "v." I also keep a large quantity of java moss with my livebearers for the fry to hide in. I find it takes about 4 tanks to separate the fish as they mature to minimize fry loss. Then I can separate them as to size.

platys may have about 12 fry, notwithstanding the mother will eat her youthful if not separated quickly adequate. i had a pregnant platy, had her in the breeder's internet when I said she changed into about to provide beginning, and she or he ate some her children before i have been given her out of the internet. i advise putting the different platy in a separate breeding internet once you word slightly white lump the position apparently like she poops (that's once you recognize she's about to provide beginning in the subsequent few days) so even as she has her fry they are going to all be in there except for some stragglers that ought to come out in a while. once you've a small tank laying round, i advise putting the children in there when you've them in the internet so no children receives stuck between the plastic and the internet, and also you'll have more beneficial room in the tank. make sensible each and each of the fry get fed, and the water isn't too chilly. my platy had children and in simple terms one survived by the subsequent 2 weeks, until eventually i went on holiday, and when I got here lower back the undesirable little guy died. he were given so vast, yet no one changed into round to preserve him :( i have self assurance so undesirable, so make sensible you carry out slightly more beneficial study and get the right belongings you want. desire i helped!

You can either buy a "sanctuary"breeding tank-it floats on the water where the dish itself is submerged, and due to the design the water flows through it,place the smaller fish in it,to obviously protect them from the larger, while sharing the same water.

You could make one out of a "take-away" -transparent lidded food dish, you need to cut holes in the base and the sides to allow the flow of water, putting the lid on -NO Holes, will cause it to float,it should have a "lip" edge, this keeps it afloat.
You may have to practise with the plastic tub in the bath, before making holes in it,test various plastic tubs(with lids),until you settle on a suitable one.

they are fish, that is what fish do. If you want to give the littler ones a chance, you could separate them out to another tank and let them get a little bigger.
