You only think you reformatted your computer. Reformatting will erase all files on the hard drive. You may have more than one hard drive.

NOTE: Data may still be readable after formatting the hard drive. If you are trying to erase sensitive information you should "wipe" the disk. Below is a link to a disk wiping program. I just searched for it, I have not used this one. There are many free disk wipe programs available.

Actually the first two answers aren't quite right. If you format a drive everything is kinda still there, if you know how to get back to it. Now if it is in plain sight that would indicate an incorrect formatting. Now what happens when you format would be that you basically start over. As you put new stuff on the hard drive it would over-write what HAD been on the hard drive. The other way would be to get a program, for instance Norton's Systemworks, that has a formatting tool. Then you do what is considered a Govt. Formatting. What it would do is write everything as 0 then 1 then 0 again. It would do that like 2 or 3 times then put a number like 2 in just to make sure everything is canceled.

You can only reformat a Harddrive you most likely formated a partition or a second Harddrive to format your C: drive (main drive) you have to have a start disc in DOS(98 and earlier)
or you use a formatting software disc or on xp you can use your install disc.IF you have partitions you should FDISK first then FORMAT each and all partitions.
Get more info If you don't know how it is a little tricky.
Take care!

If you reformatted your hard drive, everything should be gone. If you have 2 hard drives, or if you drive is partitioned to multiple drives, you would have to format each one.
