on my computer the taskbar buttons have gone, the ones that refer to each window you open. what can i do?

It's not gone, it's probably just hidden. Put the mouse at the very bottom of the screen and it should pop up.

If it's the case, right-click the taskbar (that's how it's called) and select "Properties". Uncheck "Auto-hide" feature.

Like Lvvy just said, and to protect if from disappearing in the future, right-click the taskbar and select 'Lock the taskbar'.
