I don't think that I would let a 10 month old cry more than 15 minutes. Then I think that I would let the baby know that I'm still there, quietly tell baby it's nap time. leave, keep repeating this. I don't think I would take baby out of the crib as much as I would make sure that the little one knows that I'm around and care. Naps are important. 10 months is around the age that they start thinking that they are independent and want to stay up and play and don't want to miss anything going on. Be consistent. Naps are good for you and them. Baby will get use to the routine after a while you just have to set rules.

Depends on the day I am having and the level of intensity of the cry. Usually I know right away if my 9 mo. old will sleep or not. If I think she will sleep, I will give her 5-10 minutes of wimpering. If she starts her hysterical cries, I know she will not sleep, so I give her a couple of minutes to get it out of her system and then I go get her.
There has been a day or two where I have gone over 10 minutes, but that is whewn the cry was just a little wimper and I knew she was tired, and she eventually fell asleep.

5 minutes standard teaching here in Australia. Its called The Controlled Crying Technique. Every 5 min you walk in, calm bub's down, lay them back down in their cot and say I love you, night night time.
The only reason they do cry when it is nap time, is due to the fact they know you'll come and give them attention. No matter if its good or bad, they know they are in control. It is frustrating, but it only takes about a week for it to actually kick in as a routine and you'll find that you'll be the top dog from now on and your baby will be more content and passive.

if your baby gets that upset then try going in after 5 minutes and talk gently to them and maybe relax them by running your fingers thru their hair.... its my opinion that babies will sleep when tired.. but im new to mommyness so im not sure. When my neices acted up before bed i'd make em sit n drink a glass of cold water and they coulnt get up til its gone. you cant gulp COLD water so it gives them a moment to chill out w/o it seeming like punishment-- cuz lets face it, they cant be angels ALL the time. ;)
Since your little ones much younger than they were tho maybe give her something to do that'd calm her? tv at naptime worked on my nephew when he was a baby.
You just gotta find your kids niche. No one will be able to give you the perfect answer cuz all children are so different no matter how similar they may appear.
Heck, when it was my nap time my mom put me in my room to play. I'd fall asleep with my little pony stuck in my hand then she'd transfer me to my bed... :-D

I let mine cry for 20 mins and he normally falls asleep if not i go get him for a little while and then try again. It will not hurt a baby to cry.If you do it every day at the same time he will get in the routine of a specific nap time.

I'm a sucker, and so I never let my kids cry for more than like 20 minutes before I went to pick them up.....this is why at 4 and 6 years old, they are in control of me.....bedtime is just obnoxious, because they are still "scared" to go to sleep alone in their rooms, and usually end up sleeping with us.....I say let them cry until they fall asleep, I wish I had

i have to agree with 10-15mins a book i found helpful was toddler taming and even though its for the bit older it has techniques that can be applied for babies too...it says something like start at 5 minutes go in pick baby up for a cuddle but put baby straight back down and start the timing again extending the time little by little...but for a baby that young i wouldnt go past the 15mins...it can be hard for the first few nights but if u stick with it no matter how tired it really works...well it did for me and all the friends i know that have stuck to it....good luck

I wouldn't let my son cry because usually it only takes a few minutes if I take time to rock him for him to fall asleep. It really depends on the child's personality. However if you decide to let your child cry it out, then I would suggest no longer then 15 minutes.

I had a hard time letting my son cry at all. But I've heard that unless they're crying hysterically, to let them cry for 10-20 min.
