All that putting sun cream on, turning over and putting more cream on, flicking through a book, putting your iPod earphones in, sipping a drink, turning over again and putting more cream on ... how can you say it's not work? pmsl ...

Lying in the sun doing f**k all is a brilliant way to pass a week or two ... unfortunately I'm just too busy and what tan I had from my holiday in July has gone now :-(

I hate just laying in the sun, so it is work for me. If I am doing something else, then I am working while getting a tan. In either case, the expression is accurate.

obviously you have not just layed in the hot a ss sun to work on a tan. Tanning beds are much faster and easier, they just dont last as long.

I view it as work. You have to start gradually, put on the right top of protection that still allows a tan, take care to evenly expose to get an even tan. And do this when you'd rather be taking care of laundry.

I personally find it to be a lot of work, or did when I was younger & not informed about skin cancer. I always preferred swimming and playing to laying still and baking.

Now, I would rather remain a bit more pale, use good sun-screen, and still swim and do other water sports, but monitor myself so I don't do any irreparible damage to myself.

I am an American and I don't ever feel the need "to work on a tan"....working on a tan is working towards either an ugly future (from premature wrinkling, sun spots) or your deathbed. (from skin-cancer)

It's a figure of speech.

To work on a tan, is to go about getting one, instead of just not trying to get a even tan.

Seems perfectly simple to me.

figure of speech.....as for working on a tan......it depends on skin tone and how well or how quick one tans.......so working on it....may mean a couple hours a day in the sun on both sides......until it is to the person's satisfaction.....

gosh

As Brady says its a figure of speech. It doesn't necessarily mean they are going "work" on getting one, or that it is a major task to do so.

Why do people ask questions like this just to indirectly insult Americans when they could just post up one of their ridiculous rants?
