I remember reading that Kennedy started putting out feelers for a potential run in 1980. After just a few short days the opinion company said that everyone they polled answered "Chappaquiddick."
The reason no one calls him on it now is that despite his seniority in the Senate, and his positions of power, he is really pretty impotent. And the reason is... (drum roll please)... Chappaquiddick. He has no credibility, professionally or personally, due to Chappaquiddick.

A Congressional Committee member won't say it because it is a low-blow and would draw away from the subject and topic at hand; however, that does not mean they have forgotten Chappaquiddick even though it happened 37 years ago, and take that into consideration every time he speaks on a subject.
Best case scenario, he will always be branded as a person that cannot be trusted when the chips are down and worse case scenario, he could be guilty of something much darker. Bottom line, thankfully, is he will never make to the White House.

Jesi gave a good answer. Although Teddy can survive in Massachusetts, his liberal constituents will continue to elect him, he has no national credibility because of his drunk driving negligent manslaughter. Everybody knows he was guilty despite his getting off. That is why he sits in MA and doesn't try to make any more national overtures.

The reason most people would not yell out loud in the Senate Committee chambers is because most people have better brains and upbringing. There is a place for everything, that's not the place to shoot off your yapper.
The story at the time made me sick, and I believe Kennedy got off way to lightly. I have my own thoughts about what really happened, but I won't express them here, because they're strictly my own, unproven ideas. So again, think whatever you care to. Say what you care to, in the right places. But keep your mouth shut in the improper places.

Because the drive-by media have always had a double standard.
They ignore Chappaquiddick, because it was a liberal who was involved.
They praise themselves over Watergate, because it took down a powerful Republican.

Because he represents constituents who don't care, and it is none of your business that they don't, unless you live in Massachusetts.
It's sort of like reminding Floridians every day that they elected Alcee Hastings to Congress even though he was impeached and removed from office as a federal judge for corruption. It's his consituents right to elect him, the way Chicagoans elected Mayor Daly the elder despite knowing he was corrupt.
Get a life and forget Whitewater. It's over. You only wish Monica would give you a second look. (And hey, they say she's living down the street from us here, although I've never seen her.)

Why are you still obsessing about something that happened, I imagine, before you were born? To prove a point?
