At the old speed your 18 miles per gallon would have used up 250/18 = 13.88 gallons of gas. At new speed you save 3 miles per gallon which is about 16%. The 16% of those 13.88 is 2.3 gallons for that trip. So your answer is about two gallons of gas at the cost of about one more hour of driving time. (there is probably also less wear and tear on tires and engine also)

At 70mph you use 250/15 gallons, i.e.16.666... gallons.

At 55mph you use 250/18 gallons, i.e.13.888... gallons.

The saving is 2.777... gallons.

By the way, what is a gallon? I buy petrol by the litre.
