My goldfish have started swimming with their top fins flattened down anyone know what this means, in fact they look a bit depressed. I'm up to date with the usual maintenance on the tank.

Tight fins mean the fish are sick. There are several possibilities. Go down to your library and see if there is a book on fish diseases. Or do an internet search.
Have you checked your water with a chemical test? Ph, nitrates, ammonia, etc etc.

It is called tertopolisitimus, it often happens when the water oxygen changes slightly and they seem to look tireder than normal
It does not last for long, but change the water if they start to swim sideways
if you get too much of a problem, use filtered water to take out the impurities

As of this writing I'm sure they're already dead.

It's probably ich (A real name). Look for white puffy spots on their bodies. Pet stores have treatments for this kind of thing, but considering the cost of fish vs treatment, your better off planting your dead fish under your favorite rose bush, cleaning the fish bowl well, and getting more goldfish.

get them into a bigger tank, that is why they do that, and don't overfeed them, it might be also because the water is too full with nitrates.
