Currently, the US State Department allows US citizens to use their passports for travel to all countries in the world (the travel ban on Libya and Iraq was lifted). Now, whether certain countries will accept you is another story. North Korea rarely grants visas to US citizens, but sometimes they do under certain circumstances. Other than that, your US passport can get you anywhere provided you have the proper visas.
NOTE: The only country US citizens are banned from actually going to (they can use their passports, just not spend money) is Cuba, but that's from the US government end. Cuba lets US citizens in without a hitch, in fact they won't stamp your passport so that there's no record you were there. If the US government finds out about your travel, you will probably be fined. That's if they find out of course. Most people just go through third countries and don't tell Customs about Cuba.

There are strange rules on that. I think the only country that refuses admittence to Americans anymore is North Korea . Other countries such, as Cuba, Afghanstan, maybe Iraq would probably let you in.. but if the US Govt found out you could fined or have your passport revoked. Even North Korean would probably let you in if you got a special visa.

Thomas S gave you about the best answer you going to get with out regulations from the US State Dept. I have friends went to Cuba from Merida Mexico on a US pass port they gave them a detached insert to travel on no record on pass port. I f you get caught look out you may loose your pass port fine and or time.

I am pretty sure that every country will accept it. It just depends on if you want to go into the sketchy countries (Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran...)
