ok. I'm sure the Mayor and Governor bear a lot of the blame for botching the situation. That is not what this question is about.
I'm asking for some ideas about what should be done to rehabilitate the city of New Orleans and the Gulf Coastal region nearby, to help the people whose lives were destroyed or severely impacted by the hurricaine and to assure the people of this country that we will not stand by idly next time and let people float around in their own feces or worse.
Also, I am asking if you have any ideas what the Bush family could do personally to help out. (for example, should they go down there once a month for a few days and shovel debris?)

I'm curious as to what you want him to do? Even if it was all rebuilt it would still be unsafe. Only two parts of the city survived because of their location. The rest was in a dangerous area and the city officials knew it. The levies are fixed but not really... Do you have a solution? It is much more than putting up buildings now.

I wouldn't make them do anything.
It makes no sense to rebuild the low lying areas until the levees can handle more that a Cat 3 hurricane.
New Orleans is not much more than a party town with a retarded mayor and a high crime rate.
It isn't worth the bucks to rebuild high crime areas.
In 2004 the New Orleans murder rate was 56 per 100,00 people.
Nationally its 5.5 per 100,00 people
Robberies 398.8 per 100,000
nationally 136.7 per 100,000
aggravated assaults 462.4
Nationally 291.1

You apparently have no idea what you're talking about. Do you know the chain of command in situations such as hurricanes? Nagin, Blanco & Landrieu (All liberal Democrats) failed MISERABLY at the state and local levels in preparation and response to Hurricane Katrina. It was up to them to evacuate and to call in reinforcements from the federal government...but they FAILED to do so. Thank God Governor JEB BUSH of Florida is so adept at handling these situations. Florida was inundated by hurricanes over the last few years and he handled them great! So, I suggest, before you go bashing the Bushes just because you hate them...research the facts first.
YOU'RE STILL WAY OFF! THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS FUNNELED BILLIONS INTO N.O....THERE IS SO MUCH CORRUPTION THERE, THAT THE MONEY DOES NOT GET TO WHERE IT'S INTENDED TO GO! NOT TO MENTION CHARITABLE DONATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN SENT DOWN THERE! THE PLACE IS SICKENING...AND IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. IT'S NOT BECAUSE OF PRESIDENT BUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY DON'T YOU GO SHOVEL DEBRIS?!

The Federal Government has no jurisdiction in controlling what happens in N.O.
Unless state and local officials are willing to hand control over to the Feds it is up to them.
The Feds have given money. When tornadoes ripped through our area and destroyed hundreds of homes we didn't blame Clinton for the problem. We got to work and cleaned it up ourselves. Stop blaming Bush for your local governments incompetence.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IS THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD GIVE THE MONEY WITH NO STRINGS ATTACHED. AND LET THE PRIVATE BUSINESS DO ALL OF THE WORK.

They can't walk the walk because of incompetence of our president and his administration, and of Mayor C. Ray Nagin and his administration. The reality is that the destruction in NOLA is too great to effectively rebuild. Large parts of that city will not be rebuilt because the abject poor aren't coming back and because there isn't the will to do it. When you lose your professionals (nurses, lawyers, and doctors) you are not going to recover. NOLA will stumble along, but chiefly it is done.

huh?
How about the local governement?
I thought libs were against police states.
If the military is called in without the local gov asking for it then thats martial law. It wasnt declared until after the hurricane.
The fault sits with local officials...
If we were hit by a giant asteroid and only 1 journalist was left they would write a story asking why the government didnt do anything to stop this horrific calamity...

Because the state is responsible. Florida doesn't scream for the Feds everytime they're hit--and they're hit alot.
