Companies do that to determine which part of town you travelled from. They want to know how far people are coming to shop at their store.

A lot of places ask for your number or your zip . They keep track of you purchases with you phone number and they keep track where a majority of the customers live with the zip code. I thought that was pretty cool whenI found out. When the opened a new Home Depot near buy I asked the girl there about that and she said that because at the other store a lot of people were putting down my zip code so they put a store right down the street.

It's all about the advertising. If a store finds out that more and more people are coming in from a specific area code or zip code, then they can expand their advertising. It also keeps track of the types of things that people from that area tend to buy, so they can target their ads specifically to those people.

It is their way of tracking you. Phone numbers are linked to addresses. (www.zabasearch.com) with phone numbers they can
1. keep track of what that household buys
2. send mailings to your house, flyers
3. sell their address listings to other companies so they can call and mail you junk.
4. serves as a back up incase the CSI unit comes looking for you if that item was used in a crime. lol

its mainly a marketing ploy.

you can do like i do, give them the number to the local weather line. lol

They keep track of everything you buy. They use it for their own purposes. If they have deals on certain things they know you like, you may get a call or mail out. What people buy in certain areas also helps the business stock the things they know they will sell.

For marketing purposes usually, some stores ]like auto parts stores do it for warranty purposes.

If I'm at a regular dept store, I simply tell them I don't give out that information, how about they use
theirs instead.

If you are uncomfortable giving out that info, just say.."No Thanks". It's not mandatory for you to tell anyone your phone number or zip code.
