I half agree with you. Civic ignorance is a danger. The patriot act however is a problem of its own. After all, how much faith can you have in a giant piece of legislation that was signed without a single legislator ever reading it? That in itself is civic ignorance on the part of our legislators themselves.
Here is a test of civic awareness. When someone tells you they are against the government, ask them some of these questions:
1. Have you ever attended a town hall or city hall meeting in your community?
2. Do you vote in local elections?
3. Have you ever read a copy of your local ordinances?
4. Do you know the breakdown of your taxes, and what services they are funding in your community?
The point here is that if you are not involved in local government, what chance in the world are you going to have to understand the greater levels of government above that?
A lack of civic awareness usually comes down to personal laziness and being distracted by trivia.
I spent years of my live in a big city, and it was easy to get alarmed by government, but really hard to get involved. Then I moved to a small town. Within a year, I was on a first name basis with Mayor and Commissioners. I was standing up to be heard and counted on local matters. I found that I actually had a voice in the process.
This is basic democracy.
But whether the Patriot Act is a good thing... well that remains to be seen.

I somewhat agree....however....I also think that many things go on for reasons that I will never know....legislation, political decisions, etc....those people have information that we will never have.....as far as government in schools and such....I think that telling schools what to teach is somewhat good....it sets standards for public school systems so they are all somewhat the same.....however, what schools should teach, CIVICS, evouluton-vs-creationism, any curiculum....people are going to be pissed about it not matter what....just like anythings else....in todays world kids need to learn the PC stuff also but I agree that a compromise needs to be made....and much of that could and should be handled by parents but that don't happen a lot of the time.....and I agree with no federal money to private schools....the government has enought trouble funding public schools....at least private schools get tuition....

Well if you could put prayer back in to school and whip your kid with your hand or a paddle you think it would be better?
I know that since they took prayer out the whole system is crashing down around their feet and they wonder why? Duh.
Everyone is allowed to worship freely in public but Christians, it seems. What is wrong with praying? Especially in school?
Or teaching the biblical creation, I for one did not come from a monkey cause I refuse to play monkey see monkey do.l

Not too bothered. In most democracies you get the government you vote for, although that may well not be the case in the USA. What bothers me is that the US Government has so much control in the UK.

things like the patriot act can only happen when the people arent paying attention to their leaders and as long as pop-culture rules the minds of the masses then it WILL continue and it WILL get worst.today its your privacy tommorrow its your freedom...and the level of evil and corruption is so deep that if the public ever learnd the truth the very world we live in would stop and weep out of regret that we did nothing to stop it because of our own ignorrance...but its not to late.

The Patriot Act is destroying our freedom as well.
It just wouldn't exist without civic ignorance.

It's all about control. After all, we can't even be allowed to decide whether we will use seat belts. If we don't, the government takes money from us. We have no rights
