Sleep is when your body heals itself and grows so when an athlete is sleep deprived (or anyone on an exercise routine), your body does not have time to recover from one day to the next and if you're supposed to be building muscle (caused be damaging and regrowing the tissue), your body is not having time to grow the muscle tissues back and performance will suffer, or at the very least (depending on how much sleep is being lost), will not reach the maximum potential. Try meditation or calming baths. Good luck!

Well, I know they have done studies about how sleep deprivation seriously affects people's abilities to drive a car. Reaction time really suffers. I'd say if you are doing a sport that requires reaction time (tennis, baseball, gymanastics, most sports except maybe just plain running) your performance would suffer.
