My harddrive failed in my laptop a couple days ago, and I am trying decide whether I should get it replaced and fixed for $120 or just buy a new computer now. I was initially planning on buying a new gaming notebook in January anyways. Is Windows Vista worth waiting for or is there any new technology that will come out in January that I should wait on before making a decision as what to do? I have to have something before class starts next month.

Depends...if you can recover the data on your hard drive and the machine is less than 2 or 3 years old, I'd stay with this machine (especially since you won't have to reload all your applications and files again).

If it's older than that, it's probably time to go for a new machine. I'd stay away from Vista for at least 12-18 months, Microsoft has never been able to release a stable OS. It usually takes that long to get to a service pack that really works.

Intel just announced their new chip. I wouldn't expect another new chip by January. It may take a little time for the hardware manufactures to use the chip to the fullest, but I don't think it is an issue. Also there are rumors that Microsoft is going to offer discounts for new vista purchases.

(But IMO If it is only 120 to fix. I would say wait anyway.)

Only you can decide if you want to get a new computer. It is a very competitive business and if you shop around you should get a good deal, Don't worry about Vista. Too many problems at this point. Just get the machine you want and bear in mind you may wish to upgrade down the line so get one that you can upgrade if needed

Don't put yourself behind the 8-ball with the pressure of buying a new computer right now. Just replace the drive in your laptop if it has served you well.
