Does anyone think this whole "Ernesto" thing was blown WAY out of proportion? I lived in Miami for 20+ years and "weatherd" Hurricane Andrew, so I fully understand the importance of being prepared.... but now I live in central Florida and everyone was spazing for the past 2 days.

I live in Altamonte Springs and it was totally blown way out of proportion. Now it's a Tropical Depression and isn't going to do anything to do us but give us rain that we need! I was almost on E and needed to get gas and I waited like 10 min just to get it b/c people were "told" to get fill their tanks! I understand the Katrina thing but this had 45mph winds...come one!

I don't live in Florida, but I am a regular visitor, & I love your beautiful state.
I think people are still hurting from the last hurricane season, & Ernesto struck a sore spot. This is just the start of the hurricane season for you & I expect that there will be a few more scares for everybody in the area before it's through.
Everytime a big one hits you down there, I just thank God that all I have to worry about is shovelling snow all winter.
God Bless!

I live in central Florida too and yesterday I went to a Publix for a couple things and it was crowded with people stocking up on drinking water and all kinds of things. Here's the weird part! Just before I left for the store a weather advisory came on the Tv saying Ernesto would hit Florida as a minimal hurricane at best.(It hasn't). So Yes, I think people kind of overreacted at least here in central Florida.

It's not the winds that people are worried about. There is a pocket of warm air north of Florida off the coast, so Ernesto is expected to possibly stall over Florida. It is supposed to dumb at least 10-15 in. of rain, so flooding is a major concern. Also, if the storm stalls over one area the damage will increase the longer it stays.

Its just another example of the media trying to create news instead of report it. Ernesto was coming through on the anniversary of Katrina, so the media had to play it up. True journalism is a thing of the past, I'm afraid. It's now "infotainment."

People are freaking out because of Katrina, but what I have seen from the media matches what I see (in the midwest) about every potential huricane.

As far as locals freaking out, I can't really blame them after seeing how well the federal government reacted to Katrina. I, again still in the midwest, have increased my stockpile of emergency goods (water, batteries, etc.) greatly ever since seeing the bungle that was the Katrina response.
