Good observation You are a stickler for details. Most celebrity is not so confident as we think some are nervous wreck when they go on stage or face crowd so, they have little thing they do to take the edge-off or distract themselves

Could be that O'Brien is "pulling your leg". He is notorious for doing silly things repetitively on purpose for effect.
