I won't reccomend any medication as your friend has to see a doctor really!! But I had a major fear of flying for years - I always calmed down once the plane took off and realised that actually it wasn't that bad!! But forgot that by the time i next flew!! Normally a calm and sane person, my friends were always shocked by how white, shakey, clammy, tearful I became!!! I'd also get panicky about losing my medication - not be able to fly back, being stopped at Customs for having strange drugs etc. (when you are scared of flying, you get some irrational thoughts!!!)
Anyway, went to a hypnotherapist. After one session, I was excited about going on holiday. I strolled on the plane as if I was walking down the street. Even a terrorist alert in another country (televised on CNN) as I was walking through departures didn't scare me!!!! I flew from UK to New Zealand without any concerns!!
My hypnotherapist said that its about 'updating your thinking' - remembering the positives, how you have flown before, nothing awful happened, the food isn't 'too' bad, getting excited by going on holiday etc. etc.
Try the alternatives to meds as well - you can still take the tablets with you, but there is a chance it will help!!!! Nothing to lose!!! My tablets stayed in my pocket, and then in the case for the rest of the holiday!

If anyone is frightened of flying just think about the flight crew (not the camp or twitty trolley dollies, the skilled ones up front!).
With their intelligence and willingness to train and ability to be calm under pressure, they could get all sorts of jobs that earn the same sort of money, so they would not fly if there was any appreciable risk.
The only exception to this is people of those wierd faiths that think their destiny is preordained, so can do nothing about when their lives end, or think that to die is something glorious.........a good reason why airlines should never employ Muslims, Hindus and the like!

Could be Propanylol, which is a beta blocker so slows your heart rate down to stop that panicky feeling. I must say that it never did anything for me so last time we went abroad I took the ferry. Not saying that I would fancy a boat trip from UK to Dubai though!
