******* were like bunches of hay and dried grass that helped keep fires going.

Gay meant joyous and happy.

Queer meant odd or unusual.

Actually, does "gay" still mean homosexual? 'Cause I've heard people use it in all sorts of situations. For example, how can a car be gay?

Every word has more than one meaning.. The dictionary is constantly getting updated because people use words that don't really mean that. With the "gay car", people use it in place of lame/stupid (which has 3 different definitions). Its the same thing with retarded. Retarded was meant for handicapped people and now if you see something stupid you go, "Oh, that guy is being so retarded." or "Look how retarded that picture is!"

Being humans our language is constantly changing and I don't know why you are focusing only on "Gay" and "Queer". Why don't you look at the whole English language.

I actually have a funny story about that. When I was a little girl I was very sheltered and had no idea that those words had different meanings. So when someone told me I was very gay I said I knew... thinking that they meant I was very happy. heh who knew they meant it in a mean way.

Gay now means "lame" the way that kids use it, but it's still offensive to homosexuals. My best friend is gay and he believes that using the same word to describe him and to describe something lame means that they think that he too is lame.

I doubt anyone, other than really shelterd people who don't know the new meanings actually use the terminology the old way.

I hear people saying stuff like this all the time " School is so gay, homework is gay, etc etc.

Its really crazy that people use those words in such crazy sentences. Young people use all three of the words your talking about, rather there talking about school, a person, teacher, store etc. They really don't care either if they hurt someone's feelings.

I know cuz I'm 16 & I've been called gay/fag/queer all my life just because of the clothes I wore, the way I talked, walked. It really hurt me emotionally but oh well what can you do? Its the parents fault. I guess my parents just taught me different & not to be like that. (calling people names I mean)

Depending on where you live; most of English speaking countries in Europe use the orignal contexts for the most part.

Also, you forgot "F A G"... which is slang for a cigarette. To bum a "f a g" means to borrow a cigarette.

No people don't uses them for their original use anymore, people now a days just use them as words to express anger. To be quite honest, I don't think most of them know the real meaning of those words.
