I took my sister to the Grayhound bus station at 5:10 am Pitch dark and the station was closed, no security, nothing. Not in a great section of town. Mansfield, Ohio.

Call Greyhound and voice your concerns; they're always trying to promote safety - they may try and improve the conditions of the bus terminal and waiting areas -- in the 'name' of customer service' (!)

I used to work for a large public transportation company (Toronto, Canada and area), and used their services (with my free pass) quite a bit. One night I had to wait for a connecting bus home (about 25 miles) at a medium sized town bus terminal, and was absolutely shocked to find that at 11:30 at night there was ONE light on a huge circular platform and ONE light for a very large parking lot, and a telephone on the other side of the fence and down the road! (I knew the terminal had no one on duty at this hour) This was a well-used commuter spot during the day by volumes of people and vehicles, near the centre of town, but secluded enough on its own. In the space of 20 minutes, I witnessed a bunch of drunks parading by, two cars circling the parking lot and then racing toward the waiting area, and a lone fellow commuter keeping his distance from me, and I from him until 4 more people arrived! I reported my dismay to the company the next day and they soon implemented better waiting areas, a nearby phone and a security guard to patrol after 11 pm!!

Actually, yes, I was born and raised in Mansfield. The Greyhound station is in a better location than previously. I'd say at 5am the drunks are usually passed out and the muggers are finally home sleeping. Still want to be careful though.

Yes, I've traveled from Cleveland to Florida by Greyhound and I noticed that many of the smaller towns did not have 24hr. bus stations. Many were small, office type buildings that operated during regular business hours. I would be scared to death to have my bus connect at 3am in a desolate part of town. Thanks goodness for big cities and modern convenience!
