Some online shopping sites ask for the last 3 numbers of your CCV number when purchasing something. If someone stole your credit card they could easily flip the card over and see the number anyway.

A better protection is something like "Verified by Visa" where you create an additional password to go with your card.

True, but thieves also frequently steal credit card numbers and not the actual card. If the thief only has the number on the front of the card he can't use it to purchase things online without the CCV number.

It's not about having the physical card, it's about having the account number and expiration date. It's an extra check.

If you were physically missing your card you're likely to notice that right away and have the card canceled.
