Because women's work was unnoticed in history. They were opressed, and anything they thought of was probably taken by a man anyway. It would be uncouth for a woman to be seen as intelligent or educated.

It is well known that a lot of Shakespeare's writing may not have been his own, but his Wifes and Daughters...
