The failure can also be diminished if you failed it early in high school, and all your grades since failing that class have been stellar. It can also be diminished if you can explain the failure in an essay in such a way that you show what you learnt from the failure - why you failed, and what you learnt, and how it's changed you.

NYU receives the most applications of all universities in the U.S., in spite of having the most expensive tuition/boarding cost. Of course, it's extremely competitive. NYU select students on a variety of things including GPA and SAT/ACT scores, as well as extracurricular activities. Failing a class can be diminished if you have other outstanding qualifications.

Yeah, it's POSSIBLE. Hard, though. I heard they look strongly toward your writing samples. It also depends on what college you're applying to. Tisch is all but impossible, unless you're the illegitimate child of Steven Spielberg and Meryl Streep. It's generally easier to get into other colleges. It's just a really competitive school. Once you're in, though, you're golden.
