best way is to make yourself indespensible for a month or so - work overtime etc...and make it obvious your doing more than your fair share - then start to look at job sites - leave papers with jobs circled, go and see your line manager and say your looking at your possibilities and you wanted to be upfront about it rather than going behind their backs.
HOWEVER THIS MAY BACKFIRE AND YOU COULD END UP OUT OF A JOB
I have had several pay rises and promotions because of this tactic - but just be wary, not everyone is indespensible as they think

i have just received a payrise that i was not happy with i took on a new role of PA on top of my existing job and dont feel that they gave me what i deserve so i complained and hey presto im getting a bigger rise, the idea is make yourself good enough and get into a position where they cannot afford to let you go then tell them as much as you dont want to leave you will have to because you cannot live on the money that you earn at the moment.
Do not bother pushing yourself hard if you feel it will not be appreciated, remember that if you left the company 2 months down the line the company will be saying Jo who. You are only worth what you did yesterday, nothing is ever remembered.

yeah, just force ur boss into a corner .... basically when u make urself indispensable to a company, they can't afford to lose you. Personally, I'm self employed for this very reason, too much red tape involved in working for a company. You come in, smarter than your boss, but it'll take years to reach where he is, and when you do, some other schmuck who by virtue of being even more stupid, but 15yrs more experience reaching the place u find urself at, will still get more than you also ....
But bascially, you have to make yourself so importnat, they daren't lose you ... then you can ask. Maybe you are now. But ask yourself this before you ask them. Can you be replaced by an untrained chimp, i.e do you work in McDonalds?? if you think you've got skills that aren't now reflected in your pay packet, ask and ask again, no one ever got fired for being ambitious

Step 1: Understand what is expected from you by your manager very clearly (Even if you think you know, please ask! you'll will be surprised)
Step 2: Understand what tools/ resources you'll have at your disposal inorder to execute this (Ask/ Negotiate/ Demand)
Step 3: Deliver more than what is expected CONSISTENTLY.
Follow this simple procedure & demand a raise in accordance with the market stds.
You will be again surprised - you'll receive it!
Simple isn't it - This is a tried & tested methhod

I'll be watching this!!.
All I can advise is to clearly state what you have done to warrant the extra money. List carefully every extra thing you do beyond your job descripiton as well as progress you're currently making.
Depending on your job, threaten to leave. This is risky, but if you think they'll be prepared to pay more rather than lose you, go for it.

What kind of business are you in?
The best way to get a raise, is do your job, the best way you can and with a smile. I know sometimes is hard to do. But you want a raise? Right?

I found changing jobs to be most effective...
It's kinda cool how Brits call it a pay rise while Americans call it a pay raise....

Thats life's lot I'm afraid. You'll only get a pay rise if your boss thinks you're indespensible.
