It is a good idea at the same time that it is a bad idea.

Good reasons:
Discharging the battery completely before recharging it can actually extend the life of the battery. Basically, if you keep charging it up before it's discharged, the battery will actually become weaker over time. Same concept as when you buy a new cell phone....

Bad reason:
You might not be able to save any work you were in the middle of. However, most modern operating systems will actually send your computer into standby mode before the battery actually dies, which keep all of your applications open. You can check your power mode in Windows throught the control panel. Adjust your power mode accordingly when you are relying on the battery.

It is a good idea to Completely Discharge and then fully recharge a battery from time to time ( Maybe once a month ) It extends the life of the battery considerably

Many laptops have a program inbuilt that will do it for you whilst you are running on mains power .

It is a good thing to run your battery right down, if you don't it could gain a memory and not last as long next charge.
It shouldn't cause any problems ,as the computer will shut down and will need to be started from scratch to continue.
