Depends on what level a nurse is working at. More and more nurses are becoming managers and therefore are earning more but still being referred to as nurses. At the lower end of the pay scale are what are the real workers.. auxiliary nurses... without whom a hospital could not function. Although untrained, they work with the patients all the time and take orders from a trained staff member who( because of the amount of paperwork now required) may not come in direct contact with a patient. Yes psychiatric nurses do get paid more, they also get more violence and aggression aimed at them, As a nurse of over 30yrs standing, I have often wished for a larger wage, but where else can you get a job with rewards like ours. To meet someone on the street who has been very ill and see them with family enjoying life again and to know that you helped them is worth more than money

I think that nurses are under paid for all the things that hey have to do. A doctor comes in and sees you for 5 seconds and hands you a 200 dollar bill and a nurse takes care of you for possibly days or even 30 minutes if you are at an office. My mother makes a little over 50 g's w/o overtime and she has been there for 15 years.

Nurses get paid different amounts based on experience, education level and the type of nursing. If you have a Bachelors instead of an associates, you'll get paid more. Also, if you work in the E.R. or Intensive Care unit, you'll get paid more.
On average, at least in Michigan, a nurse fresh out of school can expect to make the low 40s. But, if you're one of those people that do a lot of overtime, you could easily break 50.
And, no, nurses don't make less than policemen, teachers and firemen.

I saw my mangers check last year and she made 30 dollars an hour as an ob supervisor. It also depends on what type of nurse and where you work. I think the starting pay is like 16- 20 dollars an hour for the hospital. Clinic like 15 or less. Nursing homes 14- 16 an hour.
Nurses have more earning potential, as a person who works as a nursing assistant along nurses. Nurses and my self get shift differential after 3pm .75 per hour, after 11pm 1.00 per hour, and weekend differential of 1.00 per hour . On call pay is at time and a half you base pay and you may have anywhere from 16 to 30 xtra hours a month. There is always overtime, and we work holidays sometimes at double time and a half.
Nurses have unlimited earning potiental, many that I work with gross 40,000 and up a year.

Depends on the medical facility, but here's something worth knowing. A nurse can move to any town in the country and get a job in four hours. That's how much of a shortage there is.
Money is becoming the highest incentive these days for nursing.
The ones making it good are the ones killing themselves doing double shifts.

It takes a special kind of person to be a good nurse. I stayed in hospital not long ago for a day procedure (I had a tooth out) I am a very nervous patient and do not recover well form sedation's. The nurse cuddled me while I was semi awake and not really concerned with how silly I was been held my bowl and hair when I was sick and then gave me medicine to stop me feeling sick. Then she took me to another room gave me a cup of tea and phoned my husband. When my husband took a lot longer then I thought he would she told me not to worry and gave me another cup of tea then checked the waiting room for him. He had been sat there waiting for 40min because the receptionist hadn't told him I was ready.
I dont think I even thanked her cos I was so relieved to be able to leave there.
Nurses have to put up with a lot and defiantly don't get enough thanks and more than likely not enough money.
I say underpaid

I agree that nurses are underpaid for all they have to do.
I think they are paid less than teachers - particularly when they are training.
Difficult to say if they have the same level of responsibility.
How do you gauge this?
As they are public sector workers, their pay structure should be transparent. Check out one of their unions to see how much they are paid.
The teacher's unions have this info on their sites.
Alex - which teachers do you know get £30,000? Most teachers start on around £20,000....

Median annual earnings of registered nurses were $52,330 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $43,370 and $63,360. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $37,300, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $74,760.
Nurses deserve to, infact, make more money. They are the ones that watch out for the patients. Lives are in their hands.

Nurses get what to me seems like good money, they are in high demand and demand is growing, my sister is a nurse, we don't talk about finances but she is happy with her salary and lives as well as she wants to on it, I kinda estimate she might be making about 60k a year but thats just a guess. I don't know what psychiatric nurses get tho.
