It depends. Are you going to share one connection through a single computer, or are you going to share one connection among many computers? Let me explain:

1) In the first case, you are connecting one computer to the Internet, and other computers connect to computer one to get to the Internet. This is more trouble to set up for a home network than it is worth explaining.

***** To the poster above, the last time I did this I needed a crossover cable, not a straight up ethernet cable. Does XP get around this?

2) The most common practice these days is to buy a router for about $50 US. You get them at Walmart or Best Buy, or any place that sells computers.

The router sits between your modem and your computer(s).
The setup is really easy - most of them you stick the CD in your machine that comes with the router and you follow the directions.

You may need to buy an extra Ethernet cable. Most routers are able to handle 4 connected computers. You can also find 8 port routers easily and there are even 16 port and more available.

Your best bet is to get a wireless router since they can handle both wired and wireless connections. Even if you don't have wireless now, you probably will in a year or two.

Maybe nothing. If you have Windows 98SE, 2000 pro or XP pro and two Ethernet ports on your computer you can use Internet Connection Sharing functionality provided with Windows. If you don't have two Ethernet connections on your computer just buy another and install it.

Now go to the Help menu on the Start menu and search on Internet Connection Sharing or ICS I think they used to call it.

Set up is very easy and it works very well. The Zone Alarm free firewall can be used or better yet the Zone Alarm Pro to protect the network from the Internet.

Have fun.
