He is quite responsible and can take care of himself, but I don't want someone poking them out during gym. He just needs them for reading, writting, ETC, so I don't see what the point of getting contacts are.

Any ideas?

"He is quite responsible and can take care of himself." Then yes, if he can take 'care of himself.' If he can take care of himself and glasses, then yes, he can take care of contacts. Make sure he has no problems putting in drops or whatever else needs done. I would let him get contacts... They aren't going to get "poked out" during gym unless they're having serious problems keeping their kids under controll. If that's all your worried about, glasses fall off more often then contacts!

I would let him get them. I dont see the harm in him having them. I really doubt they would be "poked out during gym". If he needs something for when he reads he could just have glasses. However you have to remember that he is 16. Glasses would be a change to his appearance and self esteem is important at his age. I really don't see anything wrong with him having the contacts.

I'd be more concerned about his gym if there's common eye poking incidents or even that great a potential to make you mention it when talking about contact lenses.

They are very safe. It's probably about image for your son. I would say let him use them.
You obviously don't have any real problems with it, even if you don't see the point it's something important to your son and doesn't affect you so I hope you decide on yes.

I got my contacts when I was 16 years old. No one will poke them out during gym because no one will even be able to tell that he's wearing them. If you think he is responsible, I'm sure he'll do just fine with them.

Ahh yes, I recently took my 11 year old to the eye doctor (having to get new glasses every 6 months they are changing so rapidly) he recommended contacts for her. His reasoning behind it was that the contacts help hold the shape of the eye which helps to slow down the progression or worsening eye sight.

The chances of them getting knocked out during sports are slim to none, it would take a direct hit to the eye/contact for that to happen if he uses the soft contacts.

As you mentioned that ur son is quite responsible...so you can allow ur son to wear contact. But if he will not take proper care of his contacts then there is a chances of infection into the eyes. It will help him a lot in differnet way.

It is crucial that u get ur son contacts, as during gym though he might not be in the books he will still be reading an if he doesn't have them in he might strain his eyes thus causing his eye sight to decay.

Yeah there isn't anything wrong with him getting contacts. If anything he is most likely to get his glasses knocked off while playing during gym, etc. But contacts are ok.

If he wants them, then just let him have them! It won't kill him if they get poked out, and if he feels they aren't worth it then he can go back to glasses. Even if glasses are a much better choice, it's probably better for him to come to that conclusion on his own (especially if he is 16 year old).

And who knows, maybe contacts are better for him in his current situation.

we'll i'm 15 and i've had contacts ever since the 6th grade. and i've never had anything happen out of the ordinary in gym or playing sports. the doctor recommended them for me because my eyes were getting so much worse so quickly, and he said that it would slow that process down. i love them, i would hate to have glasses in high school. and i think your son would too.
