Because heavier is common in some cultures. While in other cultures, due to the type of food that is eaten, they are more slim. Usually these weight gains are caused by the changes in diet. Try eating healthier and exercising more and both of you will have a healthy weight. The two of you should let them know that putting her down does not help and ask them kindly to refrain from making those comments.

It is not only Indian family who react to their kids or younger ones in such matters. Parents of all communities worry about the health of their children. You know putting on weights is not a good sign of better health. That's why even Oprah had many a talkshow about obesity and how people fight over to regain their health. If you think only Indians do this, I must say they are very much health conscious.

It's not just Indians. My brother is fat, too and same my mom and dad (I admit, so do I) keep telling him "u eat too much, don't you see how fat you are?"...but we don't say it for him to make him feel bad, but cause it affects everything: health, social life etc. All his friends call him "Fat Guy", it's like his nickname...they call him and ask him "hi Fat Guy. Let's go out tonight" or things like that and he is not offended, he considers that as being his name. And we all want him to lose weight, to be like the rest of his friends, to have a girlfriend and so on...cause no girl is interested in a fat guy.

This question of your needs to be editted because it does not apply to indians only. It is a world issue that fat people get heart attacks more often so as we INDIANS are very clever we by hook or by crook try to reduce this disease from the world so we should be praised for this act of ours.
