Because they're playing Bingo all week.

Yes, but since we don't have town squares and other community making opportunities, market day is the only time that the old people get to see the new babies, find out what fashions all the young women are wearing, and interact with people of all ages and types in the community.

When you get old, you'll shop on the busiest days too!

By the way, you could shop on a weeknight if you're really upset by the crowds on the weekends.

A lot of old people rely on relatives to take them shopping, as you point out they work all week so they can only take them on a weekend.

Why should old people stay in to suit the rest of the public is another point.

I live in a tourist area and I can't get near the shops on a weekend should I be against tourists.

We are all people and entitled to go shopping when we want.

I go to the supermarket at 10.00pm on a Monday night amazingly the shop is nearly empty at that time.

If you want quiet shopping go when the shops are quiet. I don't imaging you work 24 hours a day.

I will get off my soap box now.

Perhaps this is when they are able to obtain transportation. Or, perhaps they don't feel like you do, that they need to stay away from anyone else who ignorantly perceives them as a separate entity, no longer deserving to be a part of society.
Older people may be slower, big deal! I work with older people, and they have so much to offer a community, given the chance.
Thank God people like you are in the minority. I can only hope that you live to be 100, and have the unfortunate timing to run into someone as ignorant as yourself.

This is a great question. It's because they are all part of an evil cult dedicated to making the lives of young people as difficult as possible. Some old people have resisted the cult and are trying to get along with us, but they're easy to spot: they've retained the ability to smile.

A lot of elderly people are very lonely and the only people they ever see is the ones in shops and banks, some of them shop on a daily basis for food because a fridge is a waste of electricity in their homes with not having much to put in it, god forbid when were all old and cranky and someone is whinging about us too.

Maybe because they want to go shopping on the weekend, just because they are old doesn't mean they are free all week. Also that may be the only time someone can take them shopping!!!

At least most old people are literate. They know how to write a complete sentence with proper spelling. Like me, Mel, they like to party all week and go shopping during the day on Saturday and Sunday.

They probably have family that will give them a ride on weekends, or want to go when the shelves are well stocked, or get the new sale items, or want to get out and see people, or ?

That doesn't bother me so much...my pet peeve is stay-at-home moms with 2-3+ small kids getting lunch at fast food joints at noon on workdays waiting till they get to the counter, then asking little Britanny & company one by one "What do you want, honey? Do you want the chicken? No? How about a burger? With cheese? No? How about..." Oh, for the love of God! Some of us have to eat & get back to work on time - just order for them & be ready when you get to the counter, Puh-lease!

Perhaps its family day, or weekdays were spent baby-sitting their grandchildren, that someone can only drive them for shopping on weekends. etc etc etc.

Remeber you will get old too and I hope that you will understand the answer to your question today in the future.

I am not old yet but my culture teaches me to respect and to honor my elders,

Are you going to shop during the week when you are old? I really don't think you are going to care. I'm sure some of them enjoy the extra help they get.......just as I'm sure you will :)
