It is because of the IT and "better" education. Today's youth have never been made to learn the same way that young people of the past were. They write papers using the internet for research and the computer has spell-check so why bother to try to spell right? And if there is a computer or calculator to do all of the math for them, then why try to learn that? It is the adults who have not given the children the love of learning that was instilled in previous generations that is responsible for a generation of lazy, uneducated people. And this is our future. Kids who can't spell, read, write or do simple math. Scary, isn't it?

Because up until No Child Left Behind, the schools promoted kids throughout the years due to age or whatever reasons instead of holding them back to learn stuff.
Also the age of calculators and word processing programs inhibit the learning process of adding & subtracting etc. in the mind. Just let the fingers to it on the keyboard and you think you've learned it all.
Another reason is something I learned personally in my family. Kids that were placed in advanced classes early in their school life were taken out of reading and math classes supposedly because those things were assumed & would be taught naturally along side the other advanced classes, which of course didn't happen. I have a twenty something kid who can barely read but is smart in other ways. sheesh.
I understand your feelings.'

I think its because they are concentrating more on subject than spellings and additions.
Every kid these days have the access to computers and hand held gadgets that he/she can depend. And they also think that writing U (for you) is latest trend and depending more on spell checks...Even for a small calculation eveyone open their mobile phones and start pressing keys to get answer.(this makes them sure that everyone knows he/she has some cool gadget). If this is the situation I think they can't really spell and add things up easily even if they are provided with BEST education.
Thanks

what do you mean by better education?
when you are memorizing the spellings, they are using computers' spell check so in real world, they won't care to remember anything and will rely on the technology and machines.
and imagine, if voice recognition technologies are used more widely, then we'll have more trouble.
