Trick question.

There are minimum sizes (3x5 is the smallest) and if you use a 9x12 envelope, but the item is like a sheet of paper inside, you have to pay an addition 13 cent surcharge for the size and weight portion

Square envelopes also need an extra surcharge

Any envelope can be used as long as it conforms to the sizing regulations for the level of service you're requesting. That is, if you plan to send a letter First Class Mail, if the envelope is larger than the regulation dimensions allowed, then the postage will be greater than if the envelope was at regulation or smaller.

Depends on what your mailing. You can't use a used envelope with markings/old stamps etc b/c the post office is most likely return it back to you.

The post office doesnt care what it's wrapped in, as long as they get paid.

I once sent something in an old Pizza box. it was hillarious to see the look on their face when i asked for postage on it. No there wasnt a pizza in it.

Check with your local post office. Envelopes have to be within certain sizes, or the prices change.
