A computer-to-computer network is also called a peer-to-peer network. It allows two (or more) computers to share each other files. Usually, a device called a "switch" is used as the interconnection point for the computers on this network.

If one of the computers has an Internet connection, this can be shared with the other computers. In this case, the device that connects the network and manages the Internet connection is called a "switching router." Almost all WiFi hubs/routers are switching routers, so you can use one of these to set up a peer-to-peer network.

A computer to computer (ad hoc) network is just a network between to computers without the use of a router or switch. You can access the Internet...you have to set up the Internet on one computer and also set up a Proxy server on that same computer. Then set up the other computer to connect through the proxy server to access the Internet. It is a lot easier to buy a router (they aren't that expensive either), but if you want a free solution, do this because the proxy programs are free. AnalogX Proxy and ProxyPlus are 2 great free proxy programs.

It is called a peer-to-peer network. You can use one computer as the gateway to the internet and have all the others connect to it. You have to turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the internet computer.
