I have always had the problem of not feeling rested when I sleep--even a full night's sleep. I have an overwhelming sense of fatigue that isn't low red blood count, anemia or thyroid, so doctors over the years have called it stress, depression, etc.

When I have a stiff drink before bed, I wake up feeling more refreshed. As I know alcohol can interrupt deep sleep patterns, this makes no sense to me.

I don't want to make a stiff drink before bed a habit, but I'm wondering if there is some clue that can help me feel more rested and less tired all the time.

any ideas? Thanks for serious answers only.

Alcohol doesn't interfere with everyones sleep patterns because the same thing happens to me.If you don't want to use prescription drugs try using melatonin(a steroid hormone secreted by your pineal gland) or something like Valerian root or Passion flower. All of these things help me and are available for OTC sale with no reported serious side effects.

If you haven't already, you are establishing a bad habit. You are actually training your body to want alcohol before sleeping. It will get to the point where you have to have it in order to sleep. Don't kid yourself - it's an addiction.

You need to find out why you don't feel refreshed when you sleep without the crutch of alcohol. For that you need a sleep study which your doctor can arrange for you. Please do so. It's better than being an alcoholic.

Good luck.

Actually most cold sleep medicine has alchohol in it to induce better sleeping. Drinking too much alchohol interupts deep sleep patterns but a little, like one drink can help your body relax and get the sleep you need. Drinking lightly and in moderation is okay because it allows your body to recover from the toxins in alchohol but too much causes your body when you're sleeping to concentrate getting rid of the alchohol instead of getting the real rest it needs.
