"Beta" is "β" the second letter of the Greek alphabet, after Alpha (α).

When used to refer to software, "Beta" is short for "Beta-test" - a period where the software is technically "feature complete" - meaning no new features will be added - and presumably stable enough for most common usages to actually work. (Contrast with "Alpha Test" which happens earlier, and is often not feature complete and even more unstable.)

Its a normal process in software development of programs - like Microsoft Windows or Word or Excel etc. The programmers have got the program to a working level but have not yet ironned out the smaller problems and have not yet tweaked it to best performance.

They release the program in this state - called a BETA state and ask selected people to use it and report problems and recommend any improvements.

These are taken into account and incorporated into the final release of the program.

Beta releases are a good thing !

Its a term used in Software Testing...where the software is tested in their lab and to make sure that it works fine in the real environment (real users) they release it under the name of BETA.
Once they find no issues with BETA build they will release officially.
Since the testers cant really test the software in actual environment its very important to release this build.
If they find any major issues (this will not happen as the beta build undergoes regorous testing) they are going to fix that and release the product.
Normally BETA build and release build will be similar in funtionality but a few fixes.

When a software is about to be launched in the mkt, the software maker first releases the BETA or the test version in the mkt so that all the flaws can be detected and solved before the final version comes out.

Beta means something thats still a trial version. Its a version that comes out just before the final version. They make modifications to the beta version before releasing the final one if needed.
